Cruising our network of inland waterways makes for a great holiday or way of life. Inland boats range from small cruisers to narrow boats and barges.
This course is for anyone wanting to cruise the UK's inland waterways or Europe's extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals. It deals specifically with the requirements of the inland boater, whether they be a narrow boat owner or cruiser enthusiast.
It assumes no prior knowledge and so is ideal for the first timer, yet the more seasoned boater will learn plenty of tricks of the trade and tips to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. It is a hands-on course with minimal theory, and is not only an opportunity to learn new skills but also a fun day out!
During the Inland Waterways Helmsman course you will learn how to handle a narrowboat, what daily and annual maintenance is required, legislation and rules for using the waterways, insurance and licensing requirements, use of locks and other inland waterways obstacles, turning the boat round, man overboard and much more. Courses can be adjusted to cover your specific needs so if you will be single handing or working as a group - we can cover this.
The course is relaxed and fun, we want you to enjoy your time with us and go away with the confidence to handle a boat safely.

Narrow Boating is deemed as an Adventurous Activity by Scouts. In order to take young people on Emsworth you will need a Scout Narrowboat Permit.
Paul has been appointed as the Greater London South West and Surrey County Narrowboat permit assessor and activity advisor.
We are able to arrange your assessment and training for any district in the UK and send the relevant paperwork to your commissioners.
More information about the permit scheme can be found here on the Scout website
